Introduction to Goshin Ryu Karate

At The School Indian of Karate, Mr. Shaktivel (Stephen) promotes and teaches the art of Goshin Ryu karate which was developed in Okinawa in Japan. Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen) believes that it probably was a result of combining the Chinese art of Ch'uan fa (kung fu) with an ancient Okinawan art of tode.

Originally it was called Okinawan-te (Okinawan hand) and later Kara-te or empty hand. According to Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen), Goshin means self-defense and Ryu means style. The system utilizes techniques from the hard styles (hard blocks and one or two very hard counter attacks) and the so called soft styles (more finesse type parries, evasive maneuvers followed up with multiple counter attacks).

Styles of Goshin Ryu Karate
In the 1900's four major styles emerged:
1.      Uechi-Ryu
2.      Goju-Ryu
3.      Shorin-Ryu
4.      Isshin-Ryu

Training Methods of Goshin Ryu Karate
Kata (forms)

Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen) explains that the Japanese word Kata literally means form. Kata describes detailed choreographed patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs. Kata are used in many traditional Japanese arts such as theater forms like Kabuki and schools of tea ceremony (chado), but are most commonly known for the presence in the martial arts. Kata are used by most traditional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts.
Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen) further explains that the most popular image associated with Kata (forms) is that of a Karate practitioner performing a series of punches and kicks in the air. The Kata (forms) are executed as a specified series of approximately 20 to 70 moves, generally with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form. Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen) admits that there are perhaps 100 Kata (forms) across the various forms of karate, each with many minor variations. The number of moves in a Kata (forms) may be referred to in the name of the Kata, e.g., Gojushiho, which means "54 steps."

Kumite (sparring)

At The School Indian of Karate, Kumite is explained as sparring and is one of the three main sections of karate training, along with Kata and Kihon.  The School Indian of Karate teaches that Kumite is the part of karate in which you train against an opponent or enemy, using the techniques learnt from the Kihon and Kata.
Kumite can be used to develop a particular technique or a skill (e.g. effectively judging and adjusting your distance from your opponent) or it can be done in competion.
According to Mr. Shaktivel (Stephen)Kumite can be further broken down into types of sparring:
·         Kihon Ippon Kumite - One step sparring
·         Gohon Kumite - Five step sparring
·         Sanbon Kumite - Three step sparring
·         Keashi Ippon Kumite - Two step sparring
·         Jiyu Ippon Kumite - Semi Freestyle or controlled sparring
·         Okuri Jiyu Ippon Kumite - Two steps sparring where the second movement is free.
·         Jiyu Kumite - Freestyle sparring.

Kihon
At The School Indian of Karate emphasis is given on the language of Japan explaining that Kihon is a Japanese word meaning "basics" or "fundamentals." This Japanese word is used to refer to the basic techniques that are taught and practiced as the foundation of most Japanese Martial Arts. Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen) mentions that the practice and mastery of Kihon is essential to all advanced training. At the simple level this would include stances, punches, kicks, blocks, and thrusts but also includes basic representative Kata, various drills, mat work (including break falls), heavy bag training and self defense execution drills.

We would like to welcome you to join The School Indian of Karate to learn and get trained in the martial art of Goshin Ryu Karate in Goa, India personally taught and trained by Mr. Shaktivel(Stephen) who is 5th Dan Black Belt.
